Water and Waste Water Engineering

Under this chapter we are going to study about water quality & waste water characteristics as well as treatment unit processes of both water and waste water.

Waste Water Characteristics

1. Temperature

The temperature of waste water is most probably higher than water supply.Because of the Addition warm by House Holding & Industrial activities.It's effected to

• Reaction rates
• Aquatic life
• Suitability of water

We have to elevated this additional temperature from the waste water.So

• Makes oxygen less soluble in water
• Increases the Rate of Biochemical reactions 

2.Odor

Odor coursed by gases produced by the 

• Decomposition of Organic matter. 
• Substance added to water
• Some Odor produce in the waste water treatment process 

In waste water in which Anaerobic decomposition has occurred Produced very unpleasant odors. 

Ex- Odor produced by  Hydrogen Sulfide  

3. Color

• Fresh w/w has Brownish-Gray color.
• But after more Anaerobic conditions,It turns to Dark-Gray.& Black.
• When black waste water turns to black,called to 'Septic'. 
• Color of water due to Metallic Sulfides [ It's produced by reaction of  Anaerobic conditions with metals
